Obituary for Robert J. O'Toole Jr.
Robert J. O'Toole, Jr., 89, of Cedar Grove, N.J., passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Robert was born in Montclair, N.J., the son of Robert J., Sr. and Sarah (nee McWilliams) O'Toole. He was raised in various towns throughout New Jersey, but his greatest memories of childhood would be spending time with his grandfather in Essex Fells, N.J, prior to being a resident of Cedar Grove since 1961. A proud veteran, he was Staff Sargent with the United States Army during the Korean War with an honorable discharge in 1959. He was a long time employee at Westvaco in Manhattan, N.Y. as supervisor for quality control of papermills. An active member and pillar of his community, he served on the Cedar Grove Town Council and as three-time Mayor from 2005-2006, 2010-2011 and 2013-2014. He was also a 45 year Cedar Grove volunteer firefighter, coached town sports and was an active Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader.
Predeceased by his parents, devoted wife, Young Ok O'Toole, and son, Brian, he is survived by his loving children, Robert O'Toole, III, Sharon Gebhardt, Diane O'Toole, Kevin O'Toole, Eileen O'Toole, and her husband, Mike Kraynanski, and John O'Toole. Survivors include 10 cherished grandchildren and 9 doting great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Friday, April 21, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with words of remembrance and reflection to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Upper Montclair, N.J. Memories and condolences may be shared at shookscedargrove.com.
