Obituary for Patricia C. Harrington (Martyn)

Patricia Cecilia Martyn Harrington (b. August 28, 1929) passed away on January 13, 2023. She was the daughter of Patrick Martyn and Margaret Mongan Martyn, who emigrated from the West of Ireland to the Bronx, New York. With her younger sister Madeleine, she attended St. Simon Stock school on Valentine Avenue in the Bronx. Later, Patricia studied at The Katharine Gibbs School and then worked professionally in advertising in Manhattan. In 1951 she married John Joseph Harrington of Manhattan, and the couple settled in New Jersey. From 1956, they lived in Cedar Grove, and there they raised their family and established many friendships that endured through all the ensuing years. Known to friends and family as "Patsy," she was a founding congregant and devoted parishioner of the parish of St. Catherine of Siena, its newly opened church, and, later, its new school, which was attended by all her children and several grandchildren. She was very active in town groups such as Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts and frequently organized trips for St. Catherine's school groups. Later, she returned to work at the Montclair Savings Bank. Throughout her life, she was very close to her family in Ireland as well as in Long Island and Connecticut. She was proud of her Irish origins and her roots in the Bronx. She was a devoted parent and grandparent and lovingly followed milestones large and small of all the generations of her extended family. She was an enthusiastic hostess of countless gatherings which kept the family close. Everyone stayed in touch with Patsy because she cared so much.

Patricia is predeceased by husband John, daughter Audrey, and granddaughter Laura and her sister Madeleine. She is survived by children John, Peg, and Patricia, grandchildren Emilia, Patricia, Tess, Catherine, and Madeline, and great granddaughter Luisa. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, January 20, 2023 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove, N.J.
