Obituary for Mary J. Basile (Pizzolato)

Mary J. Basile (Pizzolato) of Cedar Grove, N.J. passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 5, 2023. Born in Newark, N.J., she was raised in Irvington and East Orange and resided in Bloomfield, eventually settling in Cedar Grove for the last 50 years. She was a parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena RC Church in Cedar Grove. An active member of her community, she was a Past President and Vice President of the Cedar Grove Senior Citizens Club and member of UNICO. Prior to retiring in 2007, she was an office manager with SESI Engineering in Pine Brook for many years. Before SESI, she worked for Essex County Parks Commission as a payroll supervisor.

Mary enjoyed crocheting and ceramics. She spent many summers at the Cedar Grove Community Pool and traveling to Wildwood Crest. Her favorite movies were Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, and anything with Marilyn Monroe, which she watched frequently. She loved entertaining and taking care of and feeding her loved ones. Her biscotti will truly be missed! Not only was she cherished and loved by those closest to her, she touched the lives of many people and will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew her – she was “Naunie” to all.

Beloved wife of the late Archie Basile. Loving and devoted mother of Jennifer Sgourdas-Reitler, and her husband, Keith; cherished grandmother “Naunie” of Anthony Sgourdas, and fiancé, Shawn McAteer, Angela Sgourdas, and Zachary and Jordan Reitler; dear sister of Mary Ann Pizzolato-Graphia, and husband Anthony, the late Constance Testa, and her late husband, Joseph, the late Jack Pizzolato, and surviving spouse, Carol, and the late, Joseph Pizzolato, and late sister-in-law, Sheryl Allegro. She was also devoted to her many loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, March 9, 2023 from 4-8 p.m. at Shook’s Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove, N.J. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Friday, March 10, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena RC Church, 339 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove, N.J. Please meet directly at the church. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J. Memories and condolences may kindly be shared at shookscedargrove.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary may be made to the Cedar Grove Ambulance and Rescue Squad, or any veteran’s charity of your choice would greatly be appreciated.
